A pair of sleepy eyelids and tousled hair that softens around her face, a smile less toothy than when we first met her, one that, now, despite her strong-willed exterior, expresses her many inner contradictions. It’s a mournfully contented smile, procured by mothers, good readers, and those who unwittingly retain the individual emotions of a room rather than the apparent whole.

On Celine and Jesse

“The sea is the bluest of blues. It cannot be photographed. Unlike rental cars or hotel rooms, or airport fluorescence, the sea quiets those tacit burdens so often revealed near a vacation’s end. It’s possible it deadens them too. But the sea’s cobalt vastness can also elicit love’s early days and that feverish space that once existed between a glass of wine and “Let’s just do it. Let’s get married.”

It reminds us of lovers who have yet to promise each other anything—who can be, if they like, always on the verge of promising each other everything. Lovers who are especially susceptible to Sundays, to hangovers, to sitting close and pretending to read, to playacting in general, to sunlight shining through a single bed sheet and the myopic blur of morning skin, to rest stops on road trips, to happened-upon beaches and benches and dive bars with regulars, to places like Savannah by train, Paris, and Vienna, too. And perhaps now, a place like Peloponnese, where kids fall asleep in the backseat and life-choices rival love, and the water’s blueness is all that’s left to talk about after.”

I wrote about Delpy’s sleepy eyelids and love and fight, and the color blue.

daily Giulietta

daily Giulietta

Nin's Non Non Humor Humor:

In his 1969 interview with Nin, Duane Schneider asked: “Do you have a sense of humor?”

What you long for you definitively can’t have. When what’s longed for is “sanity” or “conventionality” or “adulthood,” the mad one longs mostly, I think, to reassure herself that these “responsible” choices are not ones she can — nor can be expected to — make. “All I wanted was a little piece of life, to be married, to have children… I was trying my damnedest to lead a conventional life,” said Anne Sexton, whose damnedest looked a lot like dancing the “Dying Swan” in a backyard filled not with balloons but with bottles, and who nonetheless had babies with someone named Alfred. “But,” she added, “one can’t build little white picket fences to keep the nightmares out.””

From Roddy McDowall’s silent home movies.

Some highlights: Mike Nichols dressed in all black, men working on a crossword as women make faces for the camera, Julie Andrews arriving late and seeming so Julie Andrews about catching up earnestly, with everyone.

When Beverly Hills people say, “the hotel,” they mean only the Beverly Hills Hotel. It is the hub of activity, where you buy the New York Times, get your shoes shined, have breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and run into a wide assortment of people. At the entrance to the Polo Lounge, talking to Pasquale, the maitre d’, I saw the back of a woman wearing a black-and-white houndstooth-check skirt over black leggings, white push-down socks falling onto “Thriller” shoes, and a black-and-white hair rag tied in the style somewhere between Carmen Miranda and Cyndi Lauper. It was Diane Keaton, who, her friends had assured me, never, ever went to places like the Beverly Hills Hotel. We said hello again.

Later, during lunch, heads turned in the Polo Lounge as Warren Beatty entered the room. He has the kind of star presence that even the most sophisticated people do not take in their stride.

“Hi,” he said to me in passing. “I hear you had an interesting day yesterday.” He continued on through the Polo Lounge to the glass door that opens out to the terrace. At the farthest end of the patio, he sat down at the table where Diane Keaton was waiting. They have, it appeared, remained friends.”
